VW up! up and away with new five-door baby

Volkswagen expects the fivedoor up! to be a bigger seller than the three-door version

Volkswagen expects the fivedoor up! to be a bigger seller than the three-door version

Here's how Volkswagen has upped its up! -- to five doors.

These first official pictures of the new version of the German giant's baby city car show what you can expect.

It will debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March. Volkswagen says it will go on sale across Europe in the autumn.

The carmaker expects the 5dr to be a bigger seller than the 3dr. Despite the additional doors, key dimensions remain the same. And we expect there will be three engines -- two 1-litre petrols (3cyls with different power outputs of 60bhp and 75bhp) and five trim levels. Boot space is the same as the 3dr (251-litres), as is the 2.42m-long wheelbase that provides the interior space.

Rear-seat passengers have the same room too, the only difference being the seat base is set slightly higher than the front.

Quite an impressive list of equipment to go with it too.

An interesting option is the City Emergency Braking system.

This employs sensors to scan in front of the vehicle and automatically applies the brakes if it detects it is close to hitting something.

Safety backing for the up! comes with a five-star rating and the advanced award from Euro NCAP.
