TOYOTA is developing a new system to help cut everyday parking-speed collisions and high-speed rear-end shunts.
It is expected to be in its cars quite soon.
Apparently quite a few collisions arise when drivers hit the wrong pedal or select the wrong gear – especially when they are parking.
Now Toyota claims it has devised two new systems to help reduce the damage.
First off is the 'Intelligent Clearance Sonar'. This can detect obstacles outside the driver's line of sight and will automatically apply the brakes if there is a risk of a collision.
It will sound an alarm, cut the engine's power and even apply the brakes.
The second one is 'Drive-Start Control'. This can tell if you have selected the wrong gear and flash a warning as well as reduce engine power to limit a sudden start or acceleration.
The Japanese carmaker says it has also revised its Pre-Crash Safety (PCS) system to include a collision avoidance function. This is expected to help reduce what happens in rear-end impacts, even at high speeds.
