SKODA have confirmed prices and spec levels (see panel) for the new Octavia which gets here on March 16.
The prices are broadly in line with what we said to expect last week.
Mind you the projected best-selling mix of 1.6-litre diesel and Ambition spec (climatic air-con, front and rear electric windows, Bluetooth phone connection, eight-speaker sound system, 16ins alloys, maxi-DOT information dash display in addition to the entry-level ESC, several airbags (including knee), front electric windows, swing sound system with SD card reader) does cost €24,545 ex-works.
The 1.6-litre diesel (105bhp) is a much better fit for this than the 2-litre though I also drove a sweet 1.2-litre TSI petrol (105bhp) which unfortunately is not coming here (the 86bhp version is).
This is a huge car now and will inevitably be compared on price and space with more expensive large family motors.
It will also be compared with the likes of the Volkswagen Golf, which shares a lot of stuff with it, making it one of those cars that spans segments because of its size on the one hand and price on the other.
