• N17 Gort/Tuam motorway
This will form a key part of the "Atlantic corridor, ensuring that there is continuous motorway for drivers travelling from Limerick to Galway and on to Tuam. It will link up with the new motorway from Galway to Dublin and replace the single lane and stone-walled N17 road made famous by The Sawdoctors. It is due to start construction in 2013 -- and will be a public/private partnership
• N11 Arklow/Rathnew motorway
The Department of Transport said it hoped to proceed with this project for 16km of motorway "as soon as possible". It will be a public/private partnership.
• N7 Newlands Cross interchange
Construction of a new interchange at this traffic bottleneck on the N7 is due to begin later this year.
• N5 Ballaghaderreen bypass
This will provide a new bypass running to the north of Ballagha-derreen in Roscommon for motorists travelling from Mayo to Dublin. The contract is expected to be awarded later this year, with work due to start within a year.
