New car sales well up despite economic woe

THOUSANDS are buying new cars, despite the gloom, with the scrappage scheme helping to keep sales well ahead of last year.

So far this year, 33,606 new cars have been registered, according to new figures from the Society of the Irish Motoring Industry (SIMI). That is an increase of 18pc.

Sales for February are up 4pc. Purchases under the scrappage scheme are running at 2,251 (from start of year to February 23) but because there is a 60-day period in which deals can be processed, the real figure is likely to be higher. The Revenue has benefited by €14m in scrappage sales.

In February, 12,609 new cars were sold. SIMI chief Alan Nolan said that was ahead of expectations."We are very reassured by the numbers for the first two months of the year.''
