Pamela Flood says she’s glad motherhood didn’t come before her 40s

Celebrity mum-of-two Pamela Flood

I’m enjoying parenthood more now than I ever could have in my 20s or early 30s, according to the former Miss Ireland.

The beauty queen is enjoying her role as a stay-at-home mum to five-month old  daughter Elsie and toddler son Harrison.  However, being part of a growing group of women becoming mums over 40, was never part of her plan she insists.

“Being  an older first-time mum was not part of my big plan for life. It was something that just happened, having had my first child at 39 and my second just recently at 42.”

Pamela who met her aprtner restaurant owner Ronan Ryan at 37, says, she was not ready to have children until this time.

“If you knew me in my mid 20s you would definitely have known there was no way I was ready to have children. I was not broody. I was not the kind of girl who had her kids’ names picked from when she was 12.”

Losing her mother to cancer when she was in her mid 30s, changed Pamela’s perspective on life:

“Broodiness arrived when I hit my mid 30s. Maybe it was my mother’s passing when I was 34 that kickstarted it or maybe it was just a natural part of getting older and looking for fulfillment in other ways.”

And Pamela who presented Off the Rails with Caroline Morahan for several years insists:

“There isn’t the tiniest doubt in my mind that I’m enjoying parenthood more now than I ever possibly could have in my 20s or even my early 30s for that matter.”

Her fellow TV presenter Maura Derrane, who is pregnant at 43, with her first child can take heart from Pamela who says:

“I can’t help but feel that I was very lucky that children only happened for me later rather than sooner, as all things considered I really think having them now made it all the sweeter in so many ways.

“Just hanging out with them feels like the greatest privilege, and more than that I have no desire to be anywhere else in the world. I am exactly where I’m supposed to be.”
