When America's sweetheart Debbie Reynolds married crooner Eddie Fisher in 1955, it was a Hollywood match made in heaven. That is until the day four years later when Debbie rang her best pal Liz Taylor for a chat, only to have Eddie answer the phone instead.
"Suddenly, a lot of things clicked into place," Reynolds remembers. "I could hear her voice asking him who was calling – they were in bed together. I yelled at him, 'Roll over, darling and let me speak to Elizabeth'."
That phone call led to the couple's divorce and Reynolds's prediction that Liz would dump Eddie within 18 months. "He's not a strong enough personality for Elizabeth, who preferred her men to be, well, Richard Burton," she said.
Years later, Reynolds bumped into Taylor when she was on a cruise with Burton. Locked at sea, they had no choice but to reconcile. "We decided, being bright girls. . . we would get over the problems." They remained very good friends from then on.
