JR spawns a new series
Sunday November 08 2009
AS if the revival of shoulder pads and the long dole queues weren't clues enough, now we have Dallas to demonstrate that the world really has slipped neatly back into the Eighties.
The long-believed extinct JR and Sue Ellen (or Larry Hagman and Linda Gray if you will insist on allowing them their non-fictional names) made a high-profile appearance on CBS's Early Show last week, to fan the flames of rumour and speculation that Warner Brothers is scheming a remake of Dallas.
The series, in which cable network TNT is believed to have expressed an interest, will reportedly focus not on the dramatic lives of the retirement-age stars, but on the adventures of the next generation, JR's son John Ross and his cousin Christopher.
No matter about the specifics -- or who exactly it is losing their morals and their minds this time around -- it's the zeitgeist that matters. The poorer we get, the more we like to see ridiculously rich people getting into hot water and getting their faces slapped by well-manicured hands.
So, as we face a winter of discontent, we will at least have entertainment. And it shall be ritzy, glitzy, and trashy.
And just as before, the glow from their tans and artificial diamonds shall be enough to keep us all warm.
