The Movember concept started in Australia in 2004 as an initiative to raise awareness and money for men's health problems, most notably prostate cancer.
From an initial 450 'Mo Bros' in Oz, the annual event has grown to 1.1 million participants world wide, with Mo Bros starting clean-shaven on November 1 and shunning shaving until December. Mo-Sistas can also do their bit via fundraising. A whole bushel of mo-merchandise has sprung up around the month-long charity fundraiser with the Movember website (movember.com) boasting mobile phone apps, guides and even moustache combs to keep everyone's facial fuzz on track.
In Ireland last year 12,700 people registered their Movember endeavours online raising a total of €1.6m. Worldwide the, furry fundraiser has raised €123m since it started.
And in case there's anyone who hasn't worked it out, blending the word 'Moustache' with 'November' equals Movember.
