MANY relationships break up in the aftermath of Valentine's Day, according to a leading counselling service.

Counsellors at Relationships Ireland warn that people can feel forced to conform to what are often unrealistic expectations of what love, romance and relationships are all about.

"We know only too well the pressures that Valentine's Day can bring. One of the busiest times of the year for us are the weeks afterwards," said chief executive of Relationships Ireland, Brendan Madden.

"The pressure of the day and the disappointment of unmet expectations often represents the 'tipping point' for many people, where they reach a level of dissatisfaction that makes them decide to do something about their relationship.

"Sadly, for many people that means ending their relationship,'' said Mr Madden, urging couples not to make unreasonable demands.
