How can I make '50s-style skirts look cool?

I see 50s skirts are big news this Autumn. How do you wear this look without looking old-fashioned? Are there other alternatives to a skirt for getting the 50s look?
The 50s look is all about looking polished, lady-like and elegant as perfectly demonstrated on the catwalk this winter by Louis Vuitton and Prada. The key to wearing a 50s-style skirt is to keep the top half of your look simple.
Try a little knitted plain or cable jumper. Look for a style with 3/4-length sleeves or role your sleeves up and add a pair of buttery-soft elbow-length gloves from www.glovesbypaularowan.com. A knitted cardigan would look great with a 50s skirt.
A skinny belt is a good addition to add definition, Penneys have styles for €2.
A 'proper' lady-like handbag is essential. Try LK Bennett's 'Cyprus' black leather bag, €410, Dundrum Town Centre, or for a real splurge try Louis Vuitton's updated Speedy from €810. For a more affordable price try DKNY's range which start from €149.
My top tip is to add a tulle petticoat to give a great silhouette. Retro, in the George's Street arcade, D2, stock tulle petticoats from €50. Stick with lady-like shoes, like patent courts or peep toes.
Still not convinced? Try a slim-fitting pair of cropped, ankle-skimming trousers with a cute cardigan and a scarf knotted at the neck for a fabulously flirty take on 50s style!
