How can I make '50s-style skirts look cool?

I see 50s skirts are big news this Autumn. How do you wear this look without looking old-fashioned? Are there other alternatives to a skirt for getting the 50s look?
The 50s look is all about looking polished, lady-like and elegant as perfectly demonstrated on the catwalk this winter by Louis Vuitton and Prada. The key to wearing a 50s-style skirt is to keep the top half of your look simple.
Try a little knitted plain or cable jumper. Look for a style with 3/4-length sleeves or role your sleeves up and add a pair of buttery-soft elbow-length gloves from www.glovesbypaularowan.com. A knitted cardigan would look great with a 50s skirt.
A skinny belt is a good addition to add definition, Penneys have styles for €2.
