Downton Abbey actress Michelle Dockery has admitted she has no objections to wearing a corset because it helps prevent slouching.

Ms Dockery, who plays Lady Mary in the ITV series, described the costumes for the period drama as "stunning".

Appearing on the chat show The View, she also revealed she had been advised to stay out of the sun and to avoid fake tans to maintain an authentic complexion for the programme.

"Wearing those stunning costumes with a fake bake ... wouldn't look authentic," the 30-year-old said, saying she is "not allowed to sit in the sun."

She added: "I don't mind wearing a corset."

It "informs your posture, changes the way you move, you can't slouch," she said.

The series has been popular in the States because "it's about good storytelling," Ms Dockery added.

Earlier this month, it was announced the American actress Shirley MacLaine, 77, would join the cast for the third season to play the mother of American-born Lady Grantham, played by Elizabeth McGovern.

Asked about the new addition, Ms Dockery said: "We're so thrilled. Just when we thought it couldn't get any better."
