There's nothing modest or shy about the 1980s. It was a decade packed with over-the-top make-up, bright colours, big shoulders, lace leggings and in-your-face glamour. If you have any intention of purchasing a party frock this season, you'll be challenged to avoid this decade's influence.

This amethyst dress with its puff-ball skirt, taffeta sheen and full, frilled shoulders is a great way to work the 80s trend without getting carried away into a Crystal Carrington haze. To up the ante, team with frizzy hair combed into a banana clip or to play it down, try minimal make-up and tumbling curls or Kate Moss style bed-head hair. The trick to making the look contemporary is to pare it back, not pump it up.
