Beyonce copied Cheryl Cole’s style with her choice of dress at the MTV Europe Music Awards in Berlin as she collected the first of her three awards.
The star wore a black dress with metallic detail by the designer David Koma, a similar version to the one worn by Cole on The X Factor.
While Cole’s outfit got the thumbs down from viewers – who variously described it as resembling a pair of bin lids or wheel trims – Beyonce’s dress was infinitely more flattering.
She wore it to collect the Best Song award for Halo, her first prize of the night. Awards for Best Female and Best Video followed.
The singer went through a succession of outfit changes, arriving at the awards in a full-length pink evening gown and later performing her single Sweet Dreams in a red corset, stockings and satin gloves.
To collect her next two awards, she changed into a black and gold mini-dress.
Picking up the Best Female award, she praised “all of the other wonderful, wonderful female artists”, who included Shakira and Leona Lewis.
The Best Video award was for her song Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It). Waving her left hand in the air, she said: “Ok, there’s only one person I want to thank and that is Jay for putting a ring on it.”
Husband Jay-Z was in the audience at the O2 World arena, and won an award of his own for Best Urban act.
However, he seemed less than impressed at being categorised as an urban act, saying in his acceptance speech: “I look forward to the day – you know, it’s called Best Urban artist – when it’s just music, because I go in the studio just like The Jonas Brothers, just like Green Day. We all just make music.”
