Were U2 busy for the community, Bono?

THE desolation the Simon Carmody Community must have been feeling last weekend can only be guessed at. There they were, convened in Lillies Bordello on Friday night, but, mystifyingly, Bono was nowhere to be seen.

The Bank Holiday weekend had all the outward signs of a good start when the U2 singer's long-term bessy mates, Guggi and Gavin Friday walked in (also in that night were Mark Kershaw, Leigh Arnold, Sarah Kavanagh, Brian Ormond and the RTE gang for their wrap party, as well as uberchef Dylan McGrath and yours truly). Alas, when Bono failed to materialise, revellers in Lillies were inconsolable.

Simon Carmody himself had been in on the previous night with Phelim, the sax player from The Commitments, et al, but again there was no sign of the imcomparable Lord Bono of Killiney Hill.

I don't know if the absence of Bono was even registered by Oliver Hughes, owner of the nightclub -- he had other fish to fry, what with the party he is organising for former Lord Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone.

Oliver is hosting the night at his Porterhouse venue in Covent Garden tomorrow for his friend Ken and 100 of Ken's closest BFs (none of whom will be from the London Evening Standard, I suspect: lest we forget, when told by a journalist from the city's main newspaper that the reporter was Jewish, Ken controversially compared that journalist to a concentration camp guard.)

Fiona Roche, PR manager for Lillies Bordello and The Porterhouse Brewing Company, is taking the new Valerie Roe of the club, Ms Alli MacDonnell, to London for the party with her.

Alli will now have her modelling career represented solely by Fiona.
