Rory McIlroy and U2 took top honours in London last night after they both scooped awards at the prestigious GQ Men of the Year Awards.

U2 were named Band of Year, after finishing their 360 Degrees Tour and performing a headline set at Glastonbury – their first festival performance in 25 years.

Collecting his awards Bono said: "Growing up is not something you're supposed to do as a rock'n'roll act.”

Rory McIlroy was named Sports Personality of the Year and accepted his award by video link. He was flying to Amsterdam last night to start in the KLM Open. The US Open winner was voted by readers of the magazine.

Other winners on the night included Rolling Stone Keith Richards named writer of the year for his autobiography, Life, and disclosed that it is being made into a film. The problem, he said, will be finding an actor who can portray him on screen. The award was presented by Johnny Depp, who is tipped to play the role of Richards.

After the ceremony Bono told reporters since finishing the tour he has been relaxing back in Ireland. “I’ve been in Dublin for the last week or so. I was in France but came home.

“I rang some pals and asked what they thought I should do to keep busy. One said, ‘Just walk the dog.’ So I took the dog out with my wife. It’s a mongrel and a really strong animal.

“It dragged us through he streets and some little kid shouted, “Is that dog walking you, or are you walking the dog Bono? I knew I was home. You can’t beat it.”
