Tinseltown to splitsville: marriage in the fast lane
Thursday May 14 2009
Price and Andre may be just the latest showbiz couple to fall by the wayside, but they definitely had a good innings when compared to other ill-conceived, unlikely and just plain daft celeb unions.
Pop star Britney Spears still holds the record for the shortest showbiz marriage, seeking an annulment to her drunken Vegas union with childhood pal Jason Alexander some 55 hours after it took place in 2004. As David Letterman joked at the time: That didn't even give them enough time to edit the sex video.
Next in line is manic actor Dennis Hopper and Mamas and Papas singer Michelle Phillips, who wed at the end of October 1970 but divorced eight days later. Not to be outdone, age-and-nature-defying rocker Cher waited three whole days after her divorce from Sonny Bono to marry musician Gregg Allman in Vegas in July 1975. She filed for divorce nine days later.
Other brief celeb marriages include Nicolas Cage and Lisa Marie Presley (107 days -- even her marriage to Michael Jackson lasted longer, something that should really give Cage pause), Carmen Electra and Dennis Rodman (six months) and Jennifer Lopez and dancer Chris Judd (10 months).
Indeed, it seems that very few modern celeb marriages will ever be able to match the longevity of ailing action star Patrick Swayze and his wife Lisa (34 years), Danny de Vito and Cheers star Rhea Perlman (27 years) and Denzel Washington and his wife Pauletta (going on 26 years).
However, in the pantheon of enduring celebrity marriages, nobody comes close to the late, great Paul Newman and his actress wife Joanne Woodward (50 years up until his death last September), and, the reigning champs, Kirk Douglas and his wife Anne, who have been together for 55 years, which, everyone can agree, is astonishing by any standard, inside or outside of Hollywood.
