Stephen Fry passes the 1 million mark on Twitter

I wonder if Stephen Fry's threat to give up Twittering – disclosed in this column on Nov 1 – wasn't all part of a cunning plan to generate enough publicity to push his followers over the one million mark.
Yesterday the comedian admitted that he had been asleep when he reached the milestone but seemed delighted nonetheless. "Oh, lor," he said, as eloquent as ever.
Sarah Brown was once comfortably ahead of Fry on the website where people can tell the world in real time what they are doing, but she is now stuck at around 946,818. Is the Prime Minister's wife in the mood for a counter-offensive? Not exactly. "Day off – even tweeting," she said in her last post.
How could she possibly compete with the wit and wisdom of Fry anyway? The tablets of wisdom that he hands down are frankly priceless. As he pointed out the other day: "Well, for heaven's sake. It's another day. They just seem to keep relentlessly coming, one after another after another after another. Sheesh."
