Some of the biggest names in the entertainment world gathered in Los Angeles last night to help raise $100m (€63m) to fight child poverty.

The 'Idol Gives Back', a charity event organised for the second year in a row by the 'American Idol' TV show, was a star-studded gala with live performances by Billy Crystal, Robin Williams, Reese Witherspoon and Brad Pitt.

Other performers included Snoop Dogg and Charlie Wilson, John Legend, Miley Cyrus, Annie Lennox, Mariah Carey, Carrie Underwood and Gloria Estefan.

Celebrities, including David and Victoria Beckham, Kiefer Sutherland, Ellen DeGeneres, Jim Carrey and Whoopi Goldberg, appeared in pre-taped segments encouraging viewers to make donations. Hillary Clinton, John McCain and Barack Obama also appeared in pre-taped messages.

"This event isn't just about raising money," Brad Pitt told the screaming crowd.

"Sometimes, to help people, we've got to travel outside of our comfort zone to really understand another situation."

Last year, 'Idol Gives Back' raised €48m for underprivileged children. Some of the beneficiaries this year include the Global Fund, Malaria No More and Save the Children.
