Salma Hayek is to be knighted in France.

The 45-year-old actress was among those named by President Nicolas Sarkozy on France's official New Year's list, People reports.

Salma will receive a Legion d'Honneur, and will be honoured in the five-rank system as a Chevalier, meaning Knight.

The Puss In Boots star will receive a formal induction, and have her rosette, indicating her rank, pinned by the president at a special ceremony to be held at the Elysees Palace some time within the next two months.

The Legion of Honour was founded by Napoleon in 1802 as a merit awarded to military personnel and civilians for service to France.

It is not exclusively reserved for the French and is often awarded to figures of international standing. Past recipients include Jerry Lewis, Clint Eastwood, Robert Redford and Robert De Niro.

Mexican-American star Salma, known for her humanitarian work, is married to French fashion billionaire Francois-Henri Pinault, with whom she has a four-year-old daughter Valentina.

Her father-in-law, retired businessman Francois Pinault, was promoted in the Legion d'Honneur this year to Grand Officer.
