Rihanna is to break her silence in a television interview about the night she was assaulted by boyfriend Chris Brown.

The 21-year-old singer has granted an interview with Diane Sawyer to be broadcast on Good Morning America on Thursday and 20/20 on Friday.

"This happened to me... it can happen to anyone," she said of becoming a victim of domestic violence. She said of her relationship with Brown: "He was definitely my first big love."

Brown attacked Rihanna during a heated row in his car as they drove through Los Angeles on the eve of the Grammy Awards in February. A leaked photograph of her injuries showed her battered face.

Brown, 20, is currently completing his community service sentence after pleading guilty to felony assault. He was also sentenced to five years probation and a year of domestic violence classes, and barred from any contact with Rihanna for five years.

He has given a series of interviews attempting to justify his actions. "I feel remorse every day. I'm very ashamed. But it doesn't define me. Musically, I can still inspire. But I have a bigger responsiblity to show the world I can overcome this, be a better person, and that I'm worth of being a role model," he said recently.

Brown said he still loved his ex and claimed that their relationship was getting back on track before the sentencing. "Although we had this terrible incident, we were able to overcome it together. Our relationship was something that we were working at and then, poof, the court goes, 'You can't see her any more.' I couldn't say goodbye."
