Fashionistas rally the troops in hard times

YOU know what they say about survival in this recession: it's not who you know but what you blow. Ireland's favourite recessionista Ian Galvin is blowing out three candles to celebrate the third birthday of the Karen Millen shop on Grafton Street next Thursday.
Three candles? That's just the symbol, sillies. There will be no stinting on the entertainment. Eileen Murphy's new daughter-in-law, Mo Kelly, is DJ on the night, and every cool fashionista worth their subscription to American Vogue will be there. The great and the glam will include Virginia Macari and Lisa Fitzpatrick, Astrid Brennan, Valerie Roe and her sister Bernie Cafolla.
By the way, Bernie was at the Baby "MAXtravaganza" Annual Party in Fitzpatrick's Killiney Castle last weekend along with Lisa Fitzpatrick and her husband Paul and various others to mark the memory of the 10-month-old baby Max Donnelly, who died in 2001 from a strain of meningitis. Bernie and hairdresser to the stars Michael Doyle of Peter Mark will be jumping out of the plane, with parachutes, in aid of the charity next year.
Lorraine Keane (remember her?) was due to MC the Divine Fashion Show at Carton House in Maynooth on Thursday, but was sick on the day and was replaced (plus ca change?) by TV3's Karen Koster.
The previous day, in my favourite store in Western Europe -- Brown Thomas in Dublin, sillies -- Lulu Guinness showcased her Autumn Winter 2009 collection (which is available in BTs in Dublin, Cork, Limerick and Galway). Glamorous mother of three Gail Kilroy attended with her three lovely daughters Lulu, 8, Daisy, 11, and Bo, 6.
Where would we be without the fashionistas? They are the Vera Lynns of the recession. With one difference. They always know where they'll meet again. The next fashion gig -- sillies.
