Gucci’s Milan Fashion Week beauty reference was "dark romance", says make-up artist Pat McGrath.

The seasoned beauty professional produced the look for Frida Giannini’s Fall/Winter 12 models, who graced the catwalk yesterday. Pat described the make-up creations backstage, saying “dark romance” was the order of the day.

She added that her signature bleached brow brought an “ethereal” look to the overall aesthetic.

“It’s a little Rossetti,” McGrath continued to Style.com. The comment was in reference to the pre-Raphaelite painter’s lip-stained portraits.

McGrath used dark cherry pouts to achieve the gothic-inspired look. She lined lips with a “deep bordeaux lipstick” that she “dabbed in the centre with a bright red pigment topped with a bit of gloss”.

McGrath then explained why bleaching the brows was essential to creating the overall look.

“A red lip with brows tends to go more period. And with the romantic hair…” she exclaimed.

McGrath was referring to hairstylist Luigi Murenu’s long and dreamy centre-parted waves.

The pretty style was prepped using John Frieda Luxurious Volume Thickening Mousse. It was then effortlessly twisted into two sections at the front and held together with a custom-made hair clip.

“Make it look gorgeous,” Murenu instructed his team.
