One of the greatest breakthroughs in training, coaching and mentoring in the past 30 years is the discovery of the nine different energies or personality types known as The Enneagram.
Years ago, we thought we could do a time-management course, or a motivation course with the idea that one size fits all. Not true. We have nine utterly different ways of being motivated. We have nine totally different ways of managing time. We have nine radically different ways of influencing, communicating and negotiating. . . and nine different ways of running, swimming or taking any kind of exercise. There are nine types for nine different people powered with nine different energies. So which one are you?
1/ PERFECTIONISTS OR REFORMERS
They pay great attention to detail and are precise, responsible and hard-working. They demand high standards of themselves and others. They may postpone taking part in a race until they feel they are prepared properly.
2/ HELPERS OR GIVERS
They prioritise relationships and helping others. In their preparation, they need to take time off from helping others for their own rest and recovery times. They need to understand that self-care is not being selfish.
They are very focused on goal-achieving in the most efficient and effective way. For the race, they will put a plan in place and follow it rigorously. Their goal is to achieve a PB.
4/ CREATIVE ARTISTS, ROMANTICS
They are sensitive, intuitive, artistic, expressive and dramatic. They will most likely run in an outfit dressed up as a Disney character or the like.
They are logical, intelligent and love gathering information. Excellent strategists, they will work their training around a carefully coded spreadsheet. They will run with a phone App that will give them precise feedback on mileage, times and calories burned.
6/ SCEPTICS, SUPPORTERS AND TROUBLESHOOTERS
They have questioning minds, like to be prepared and easily see pitfalls as well as possibilities. They are loyal and dependable. They prepare diligently for races and carry Band-Aids for the possible blister.
7/ OPTIMISTS AND VISIONARIES
Where other people see problems, they see opportunities. They will turn the race into a fun run and will definitely throw the best party afterwards.
8/ LEADERS AND CHALLENGERS
They are direct, assertive and commanding. They know what they want to achieve in the race and have the willpower to make it happen. They see problems simply as challenges and will make a pile of money for charity.
9/ PEACEMAKERS AND MEDIATORS
They put people at ease and resolve conflict. They are big-picture thinkers and once they write something down, they do it. They are supportive and inclusive.
So which one are you? Have a look around at your next race and have some fun seeing the types.
All kinds are rubbing shoulder with you every race and they all have strong points.
