Lizzie Lee of Leevale AC, who a few months ago featured on the front cover of FIT Magazine, achieved a big marathon personal best time of 2:38.09 in Berlin on Sunday – knocking a whopping eight minutes off her previous best time.
The Leevale woman, who is coached by Donie Walsh, finished in ninth place overall. Gladys Ganiel of North Belfast Harriers finished 13th in 2:39.36.
Among the other Irish athletes taking part in the event, Thomas Frazer posted 2:17.46.
It was a good day to set a PB in Berlin as men's race winner, Wilson Kipsang of Kenya, set a new marathon world record time of 2:03.23 – beating the existing record by a full 15 seconds.
This was another top performance by Kipsang, who also ran 2:03.42 for the distance in Frankfurt in 2011.
Sunday was the eighth time in 15 years that a world record has been broken on the Berlin Marathon course.
