With joint efforts from Dan Martin, Matthew Brammeier (right), Sam Bennett and Nicolas Roche, a star team of Irish cyclists set out for the World Championships in Italy last week.
Tour de France stage winner Martin is now a household name. Bennett has celebrated many prestigious wins this year. Brammeier is the current Irish National Champion. And Roche demonstrated supreme form this year with his performance in the Vuelta a España.
Roche competed in the elite men's time trial and incredibly finished in 13th place, having battled the clock against the world's most renowned field.
Sunday's road race brought some disappointment to the team after all crashed at some point along the soaked circuit.
After Roche crashed, the next time around brought Martin down nearly in the same spot.
Bennett crashed before Roche and lost spokes, forcing a time delay for a front-wheel change.
Brammeier waited for Roche after crashing in the hope of helping him back to the bunch – all fighting every step of the way for contention.
Working to get back the time they had lost, the team came away with a new sense of camaraderie. Even in defeat, a new spirit has emerged and brought masses of Irish together – banded by the love of cycling.
