Schoolchildren get chance to try out cross-country racing

The Cork Post-Primary Schools Cross-Country Challenge -- a joint promotion between Athletics Ireland, the Cork County Board, the South Munster Schools' Association and Cork IT -- saw almost 500 young athletes turning out in ideal conditions, writes John Walshe.

The event allowed those new to the sport an opportunity to try out cross-country over shorter distances than those in the schools' championship races after Christmas.

With individual medals for the first 10 across the line and the first three teams in each of the six races, competition was keen.

Among those to impress were Tamzin Muldowney (St Mary's Midleton), Niamh Cotter (Ardscoil Phobal, Bheanntraí) and Ruairí O'Cathasaigh (Coláiste Daibhéid).
