Last Saturday's Hurley-Hoey Memorial 10k in Clare attracted more than 700 runners and walkers and resulted in a comprehensive victory for Kenneth Rogers of St Mary's AC.
Rogers finished in an impressive time of 31.49, which put him more than three minutes clear of James Murphy (34.53), with Gerry Carty taking third spot in 35.08. Barbara Cleary was also in top form, finishing fourth overall in one of her fastest times of 35.14.
The event was held in memory of two well-known figures in the Doora-Barefield parish, Ger Hoey and Eilish Hurley, with money raised going to two local charities, St Anne's School and the Sunshine Ward at Limerick Regional Hospital.
BORRISOKANE SET TO WELCOME LOCAL STAR O'DOHERTY FOR 1OK
The village of Borrisokane in Co Tipperary will be the venue on Sunday next for a 10k, which gets under way at 1pm.
No doubt there will be a big welcome for local star Siobhan O'Doherty following her victory last Sunday at the Ballycotton '10'. Last year O'Doherty – who also won the Dublin Women's Mini-Marathon in June – set a course record of 35.25.
Sergiu Ciobanu, who won the men's race at Ballycotton, holds the course record with his 31.41 from 2013. Prizes go to the first six men and women along with category awards.
Entry fee for the 10k is €15 with the accompanying 5k for beginners costing €10 or €25 for two adults and two U16s. Entries will be taken from 11am with proceeds going to the development of the Borrisokane club's track. Details of the race can be had from John O'Farrell at 087-2210115.
LEEVALE MEET A GREAT CHANCE TO PREPARE FOR OUTDOOR SEASON
The Leevale 2014 Open T&F Meet takes place at Cork IT track on the weekend of April 5/6. This event continues to go from strength to strength and is a great opportunity for athletes to start their preparations for the forthcoming outdoor season.
The event is pencilled in for the weekend before the Intervarsity T&F Championships, which will be held in WIT this year, and should serve as good preparation for those taking part in that event. Like previous years, this meet will be a two-day affair; the junior and senior programme will be on the Saturday with the juvenile events on Sunday.
The comprehensive two-day programme can be seen on the Leevale website at www.leevale.org
