A GALWAY couple who lost their only child in a road accident eight years ago remembered their "best friend" as they opened a commemorative garden for organ donors.

Denis and Martina Goggin were joined by hundreds of transplant recipients and families of donors as they opened the Circle of Life Commemorative Garden in Salthill, Galway.

The garden was the idea of the couple, who set up the charity Strange Boat Foundation following the death of their son Eamonn in a road crash in 2006.

The €150,000 project incorporates stones from all 32 counties along with stones from five continents. Mr Goggin told those gathered the day marked "the realisation of a dream".

Also present was Dr David Hickey, the director of Transplantation in Ireland. He described the garden as a place where everybody could come and contemplate their lives.
