In what was certainly a nice birthday present, Nollaigh O'Neill recorded the biggest victory of her career last Sunday week, coming home first in the Lanzarote Marathon, which took place for the 27th time on the Spanish holiday island.
The Cork woman, who turned 42 on the day of the race, knocked almost three minutes from her previous best posting a time of 2:52.58.
Not alone did this easily give her the female title, it also placed her seventh overall of the 186 finishers.
O'Neill's previous best was 2:55.45 last June. Her win also capped a brilliant year for the Leevale club who now have three women marathoners ranked in the top 15 in the country.
Lizzie Lee's 2:38.08 from Berlin places her third overall, with Claire Gibbons-McCarthy (second in Dublin with 2:39.27) equal sixth and O'Neill now moving up to 14th on the list.
