A NEW drive is under way to try to end the myths and misconceptions surrounding palliative care.
MYTH: Having hospice and palliative care means you will die soon.
FACT: Hospice and palliative care is not just for the end of life. It is a holistic approach – that includes caregiver support, spiritual and bereavement care. It also advocates greater promotion of the facts.
MYTH: Hospice and palliative care is just for people with cancer.
FACT: All those who are diagnosed with a chronic life-limiting illness can benefit from hospice and palliative care.
MYTH: Palliative care only manages pain through the use of addictive narcotics.
FACT: Palliative care is whole person care that provides psycho-social and spiritual care along with pain and symptom management.
The call for more clarity has been made by the All Ireland Institute of Hospice and Palliative Care which is made up of a consortium of health agencies and universities both north and south.
David Praill of the Worldwide Palliative Care Alliance said that 42pc of countries worldwide did not have any identified hospice and palliative care services.
In addition, 80pc of people globally lack adequate access to medication for treatment of moderate to severe pain.
