Former FIT Magazine cover star Barry Murphy proved his class in the pool at the weekend, taking home bronze at the European Short Course Swimming Championships in Herning, Denmark.
Murphy, who trains at Swim Ireland's Performance Centre at the National Aquatic Centre, made it to the 50m breaststroke final as the eighth fastest qualifier in 26.86 seconds.
And despite starting in the outside lane, the 28-year-old swam a fast first 25m to put himself in medal contention, finally hitting the wall in 26.56 to claim the bronze.
"I'm really delighted," Murphy said afterwards. "I knew I was in with a shout off the rankings and the times I posted during the summer, so I tried to keep my cool all day and execute my plan for the swim. It came down to hundreds of a second for the medal and thankfully I got my hand on the wall to secure the bronze."
It's Murphy's first major championship medal and Ireland's fourth at these championships in four years, following the success of Grainne Murphy, Melanie Nocher and Sycerika McMahon, and puts him in a strong position heading into 2014.
