COMEDIENNE Ruby Wax has backed the Irish Independent's 'Mind Yourself' campaign, writes Laura Butler.
The 62-year-old, said she was in favour of initiatives that helped battle stress and anxiety, in turn eliminating the stigma attached to mental illness.
"I think the more people who come out and speak the better.
"The worst part about it all is that we don't tell each other what's going on.
"A lot of people approach me to talk to me (about mental health) and I kind of love that, because it makes me feel not so alone," the actress said.
Wax has battled depression but conquered her demons with 'mindfulness', a mix of meditation and cognitive behaviour therapy, which she studied at Oxford University.
She discusses ways of coping in her new book, 'Sane New World'.
"Mindfulness has helped de-stress and focus when I need to focus," she told the Irish Independent.
"I still live in this world, but mindfulness is now a way to check in and open all your senses, ground yourself, so you have a choice where you want to go.
"You just have to be aware of what your habits are and I watch myself all the time."
This afternoon she will speak at St Patrick's University Hospital's Founder's Day.
The Irish Independent 'Mind Yourself' campaign runs until October 13.
