Meeting the HSE criteria
Published 07/01/2014 | 02:30
Before a woman is deemed 'eligible' to have a homebirth, a number of criteria must be considered by HSE officials. These include:
* Previous caesareans -- regardless of how many vaginal births she has had since.
* If she is over 40.
* Previous baby's size.
* How many children she has had.
* Any underlying moderate or severe medical conditions and histories, such as asthma or diabetes.
Women must be 'signed off' by a consultant for homebirth. The consultant's decision is final. Eligibility does not take individual assessment into account, nor informed consent on the behalf of the woman.
