Key results of poll

* 88pc are concerned that without insurance they would be waiting for care in a public hospital;

* 80pc are concerned that lack of insurance would mean they don't have access to innovative treatments;

* 84pc believe the Government has a responsibility to make premiums affordable;

* 48pc believe the Government is responsible for recent increases in premiums;

* 75pc believe private insurance relieves pressure on public hospitals;

* 73pc pay their own premiums and 13pc have it paid in part or full by their employer;

* 28pc intend to change at next renewal – 7pc will cancel and 17pc will downgrade;

* 25pc downgraded cover at last renewal;

* More than a third used their insurance in the past year to access hospital care.

(Poll of people with health insurance conducted by Red C in February, commissioned by Independent Hospital Association of Ireland.)

(1,007 interviews were conducted. From this, 524 adults with health insurance were asked the questions.)
