Fionnuala Britton showed further improvement on Saturday when finishing second in the Great Edinburgh Cross-Country International.
Britton, along with Sophie Duarte, Gemma Steel, Charlotte Purdue and Emelia Gorecka were the early race leaders.
Gorecka and Steel forced the pace as Britton settled back in fourth place. The crucial point of the race came when Steel and Gorecka broke clear as the athletes headed out on the final lap.
Britton dug deep over the last lap to power past Gorecka, but Steel ran out the winner in 20.35.
Britton finished nine seconds back in a time of 20.44, with Gorecka third in 20.51. European champion Duarte finished in fourth place in a time of 20.57. Sarah Treacy (Moynalvey AC) finished 22nd in 21.39.
Michael Mulhare (Portlaoise AC) continued his excellent cross-country season with a fifth place finish in the Senior Men 8k race. Mulhare battled all the way to the line in 24.32. The race was won by Chris Derrick of the US in 24.11. David McCarthy (West Waterford AC) finished 11th.
