BRUSSELS sprouts will be sweeter than normal this year due to high levels of sunshine in recent months.
Consumers who don't normally enjoy this festive vegetable may get a pleasant surprise this Christmas as their normally bitter taste will be offset by more than a hint of sweetness.
It's a similar weather-related phenomenon which led to a particularly vivid autumn as high levels of sun created more sugars in plants, creating sweeter tasting veg and brighter hues in leaves. Consumers have been urged to buy Irish-grown vegetables this year as growers are enjoying bumper crops.
"Given the good weather over recent months there is a strong supply of excellent quality Irish seasonal fresh field vegetables available. . . including parsnips, carrots, cauliflower," said Junior Agriculture Minister Tom Hayes.
