Whiteboard Jungle

The issue of college fees is bound to plague Education Minister Ruairí Quinn at any future election he chooses to fight.

Three years ago, when fees were a relatively modest €1,500, he ostentatiously signed a USI pledge promising to oppose any further increases in third-level charges. "We're freezing it at €1,500," he said.

Well the thaw has been spectacular. By the next general election, if Mr Quinn is still in the hot seat, he will have doubled fees to €3,000.

Perhaps he subscribes to the teaching of Ralph Waldo Emerson: "A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds."
