* Trinity College is currently piloting a scheme where applicants for some courses can be assessed on personal statements, and not just their Leaving Cert points.
These personal statements cover matters such as why a student is interested in a particular course.
These manifestos are common in foreign universities, but can college authorities be sure that the student actually writes them?
In the Daily Telegraph, an unnamed school teacher recently revealed how he rewrote these statements as a matter of routine for his pupils.
In one case a pupil wrote: "I've been interested in doing English ever since I read Harry Potter."
And this magically became: "I have wanted to study English ever since I queued to see the Henriad at the National Theatre."
