A WELL-known figure among private sector employers is being appointed to head up SOLAS, the new state authority for further education and training, which will replace FAS.
The Government has nominated Pat Delaney for the role of chairperson.
He is a former staff member of the employers' organisation IBEC, and director of the Small Firms Association.
His appointment to SOLAS is subject to approval by the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Education and Social Protection.
Mr Delaney will not receive a fee but, in line with public sector regulations, will be entitled to claim travel and subsistence.
It is expected that SOLAS will be established within the coming weeks.
SOLAS will have the same functions in further education and training as the Higher Education Authority has at third-level, bringing the delivery of further education and training under one umbrella.
