Going to College

My story: David McGowan

Monday August 23 2010

Sligo man David McGowan enjoys his professional rugby career with one of France's leading clubs, La Rochelle. The 6' 5" lock is a one of a number of Irish players who play professionally in France.

David found himself faced with a conundrum regarding his future career path and how to ensure the completion of a Manufacturing Management Degree. "Being in an insecure, high-risk job it was important for me to set a good base to start a second career after rugby," he said.

While on a break home in 2008, the Ballymote native called to the Institute of Technology (IT) Sligo to enquire if he could somehow combine study with his career. He was amazed when Head of Engineering Frank Carter responded positively and arranged for David to complete his course in France, using IT Sligo's online programme.

With 21 courses available online, IT Sligo has become Ireland's leading provider of this popular education system since moving into online learning in 2002. More than 1,500 students are benefiting from the flexibility of online learning.

The online student sees and hears the lecturer delivering live lectures in real time. Lecturers seek feedback from students to ensure that what they present is understood -- it really is a virtual classroom.

David, who will graduate this November, proves the point that you can combine work, sport and study -- even if you are based overseas.
