LC German: Challenging but fair

The exam complemented Easter's oral exam well, which was a welcome change for students. Grammar proved the trickiest as did a few curve balls in vocabulary.

Although challenging in parts, Leaving Certificate German Higher Level was a fair paper, which presented students with a range of topical, relevant and interesting questions, said Orla Ni Shuilleabhain of The Institute of Education.  It well reflected the material covered in the oral exam at Easter which would have been welcomed by students.

However, the grammar section was testing, requiring  a high standard of grammatical ability  and weaker students would have found it particularly tough, she said.

She said Comprehension 1 was a well pitched section, with some testing vocabulary in places

“ Students would have found the German language question manageable and accessible. Theme of Change was reflected in Question 4, which gave scope to all students” she said..

Both sections of Applied Grammar would require students to have a high standard of grammar and would be very testing for the average to weaker student.

Ms Ni Shuilleabhain said the Comprehension 2, on the theme of travel and house exchange, would have been welcomed by students as it is relevant to the picture sequences that were covered in the oral exams .

Saving money was a topical theme in  Section 2 .  Students were also asked what they would do if they won the Lotto and she said conditional nature of this question would have proved challenging to the weaker students.

The optional Letter: section left very little room for prepared material and students were required to think independently.

The themes of travel, diets, blogging and internet usage and body tattoos were well considered and would have been interesting and relevant, although the conditional tense was once again required here, which would have tested student ability well, said Ms Ni Shuilleabhain

The optional Short essay topics of  heavy school bags, travel, digital media in schools and how young people spend their time ‘offline’ were also well considered and provided students with good scope.

She described the ordinary level  paper as well balanced, with scope for all
