MORE than 500 people came out to see the turning on of the Christmas lights on one of Ireland's busiest shopping streets last night.
Shoppers celebrated as Grafton Street's festive lights were officially switched on, marking the first of a series of events taking place around Dublin over the festive season.
Richard Guiney, CEO of www.dublintown.ie, told the Irish Independent that the importance of offering the public 'free fun' in the lead-up to Christmas was crucial in today's economic climate.
"This is all about everybody really enjoying their city, and that's why we have so many events and free things taking place.
"Every year is bigger and better because people love getting involved."
Singer Brian Kennedy was on hand to turn on the lights.
