CELEBRITY chef Rachel Allen has joined forces with Rudolph the Reindeer to deliver a Christmas boost for the RNLI.
The Ballymaloe House and TV chef launched the organisation's 'Reindeer Runs' Christmas appeal and said it was one of Ireland's most deserving causes.
"My family and I watch the (Ballycotton) volunteers launch their all-weather lifeboat on exercises every Wednesday," she told the Irish Independent.
"When we see it launch any other time, we know the callout is for real. The service relies completely on the generosity of the public and voluntary contributions. The 'Reindeer Runs' are a great way for the whole family to have fun while helping the charity to save lives at sea."
Last year, the RNLI undertook 980 missions off the Irish coast -- bringing 905 people to safety.
The 'Reindeer Runs' -- which take place at Fota House in Cork on November 25 and Marlay Park in Dublin on December 2 -- are now among its most important fundraisers.
Participants in the events must wear some form of Christmas-themed clothing. They can opt for a 10km or 5km run or a more leisurely 'Santa Saunter' of 2km, with entry costing €22, €20 and €9 respectively.
The closing date for entries is November 23 for Cork and November 31 for Dublin. See www.rnli.org/ reindeer for more information.
