Encouraging the achievement of personal goals is what taking part in The Barringtons Hospital Great Limerick Run is all about.
The inclusive nature of this sporting event – there are three separate races to cater for all levels of fitness – goes some way to explaining its mass following.
In 2012, for example, the Great Limerick Run had participants from all 32 Irish counties and from over 23 countries worldwide.
And this year, organisers hope to exceed these figured with the establishment of the race as a premier event in the national sporting calendar.
Now the fastest growing participatory event in Ireland, the three-year-old road race welcomed the registration of over 10,000 race entrants in 2013.
And, according to an economic and social impact report commissioned by Limerick City Council, 49pc of respondents stated that the event was the main reason they started physical exercise.
The Government designated the medieval city of Limerick as the first national ‘City of Culture’ in 2014.
