THE Irish desire to emigrate is not confined to planet Earth after almost 850 people from this country applied to live on Mars.
Mars One is not-for-profit organisation that plans to establish a permanent human settlement on Mars in 2023 and has invited applicants from around the world to apply for places.
Mars has been the subject of human fascination for as long as most of us can remember (and a lot earlier than that), and space buffs are finally getting the chance to explore the red planet as part of the Mars One programme.
The exploratory initiative aims to establish a small community of humans on Mars in 2023 as part of the Mars One programme.
One of our favourites is Tom, a 23-year-old from Dublin, and a passion for falconry, who has "a great knowledge of space from reading and watching mulitple Documentarys" (sic) and who "likes to go stargazing on the Irish mountains".
A total of 849 Irish people applied to be considered as a resident for the Mars One programme, most of whom cite a natural fascination with space exploration and the universe as their motivation.
The video above explains the programme, which offers a one-way ticket to Mars with the intention for successful candidates to live there for the rest of their lives.
