The Band Played Waltzing Matilda
Written by Scottish-born Australian singer-songwriter Eric Bogle in 1971, and made famous by Liam Clancy, 'The Band Played Waltzing Matilda' is considered one of the finest anti-war songs. It tells the story of a young Australian who is maimed at the Battle of Gallipoli. In it he recalls "that terrible day/in the hell they called Suvla Bay/They were butchered like lambs at the slaughter."
