The research, conducted by a team in the Department of Psychology at the University of Essex, studied the reactions of more than 245 women who were shown videos involving both naked men and naked women.

The findings were based on whether the subjects’ pupils dilated in response to sexual stimuli and 82pc of the women tested were aroused by both sexes.

Of those who identified as being straight, 74pc were aroused by videos of attractive men and women.

Women who identified as lesbians were found to have stronger sexual responses to videos of women than men.

Lead researcher Dr Gerulf Rieger said: "Even though the majority of women identify as straight, our research clearly demonstrates that when it comes to what turns them on, they are either bisexual or gay, but never straight."

The research found that women who identify as lesbian have sexual reactions similar to men, who are distinctly more attracted to one sex or the other.

"Although some lesbians were more masculine in their sexual arousal, and others were more masculine in their behaviours, there was no indication that these were the same women," said Dr. Rieger.

"This shows us that how women appear in public does not mean that we know anything about their sexual role preferences."
