The laughter. The emotional mammy. The warm embraces. The awkwardness. The annoyance. The escape.

Ryanair's latest Christmas video sets the scene for a sentimental homecoming, before dashing it with a sharp dose of Irish humour.

"Uncle Dermot's staying in your room," is the moment the penny drops.

The #XmasEscape ad follows an irreverent tradition - Ryanair's 2015 effort was a John Lewis spoof featuring Michael O'Leary picking his nose on the moon.

The 2016 edition comes as the airline prepares to carry more than six million customers over the Christmas and New Year holiday period.

Ryanair has also conducted a Christmas survey of over 1,500 customers, revealing Tenerife as their most popular winter sun destination for 2016/17.

The survey also reveals its passengers' favourite Christmas movie (the original Home Alone) and favourite Christmas song (Fairytale of New York).

The enduring power of Shane McGowan and Kirsty McColl's 1987 classic is also celebrated in a seasonal video from Castle Leslie Estate (below).

The Blue Book hotel's parody aims to raise awareness and funds for Brooke, Action for Working Horses and Donkeys (thebrooke.org), a charity that helps care for over two million horses worldwide that are currently working in often, extreme conditions and the families that rely on them for their livelihood.
