Zurich is the most expensive holiday destination on the planet, according to a new global survey.

An annual report released by Hoppa, the airport transfer company, lists 84 destinations on a scale of cheapest to most expensive, with Sofia, the Bulgarian capital, ranking as the least expensive to visit in 2017.

The survey is based on the average price of a basket of goods and services (hotel, food, drink, taxi, tours and entertainment) sampled at the various locations.

Hoppa's 10 most expensive destinations:

  1. Zurich - £170.43/€200.95
  2. New York - £157.20/€185.35
  3. Copenhagen - £150.72/€177.70
  4. Oslo - £147.36/€173.75
  5. Stockholm - £131.14/€154.62
  6. Venice - £127.03/€149.78
  7. Amsterdam - £126.47/€149.12
  8. Honolulu - £124.23/€146.48
  9. Rome - £123.37/€145.46
  10. Caracas - £123.08/€45.12

Dublin managed to avoid the Top 10 by a whisker - placing 11th with an average price of £122.80 (€144.79) for the basket of goods.

London placed 12th, with Dublin also ranking as a more expensive holiday destination than Dubai (13), Paris (15), Tokyo (17) and Las Vegas (18).

With Brexit taking a toll on British holiday spend, Fáilte Ireland and Tourism Ireland have been stressing the need for competitiveness. British visitors account for some 42pc of all overseas visitors, according to the Central Statistics Office.

Receipts like the one below remain all too common in the capital, however (read our 10 ways to save Dublin as a tourist destination here).
